Patent applications related to robotics increased by 1% per year on average in the power industry since 2020

The global power industry experienced a 1% increase in annual average growth rate (AAGR) in the number of robotics-related patent applications between 2020 and 2022. The total number of robotics-related grants increased by an AAGR of 16% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database.  

Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the power industry was 8,611 since 2020, while 6,728 applications were granted.  

The top five companies by filings accounted for 41% of patent applications  

Analysis of patent applications by assignee shows that State Grid Corporation of China filed the most robotics patents within the power industry since 2020. The company filed 1,137 robotics-related patents since 2020.

It was followed by China Southern Power Grid (713 applications), ABB (622 applications), LG (106 applications) and Korea Electric Power (77 applications). 

The top five companies by grants accounted for 39% of successful patent grants 

Analysis of patent grants by assignee shows that State Grid Corporation of China was granted 838 patents related to robotics within the power industry since 2020. It was followed by China Southern Power Grid (447 grants), ABB (216 grants), Strong Force Iot Portfolio (85 grants) and Korea Electric Power (62 grants).

Patent activity was driven by China with a 70% share of total patent publications 

The largest share of robotics-related patent publications in the power industry since 2020 was held by China with 70%, followed by the US (15%) and South Korea (6%).
