Molecule Software: Excellence Awards Interview

Power Technology Excellence Awards 2025: Molecule Software

Beyond Innovation: Molecule Software's Commitment to User Experience and Accuracy

In an exclusive interview, Sameer Soleja, CEO of Molecule Software, discusses the company's recent Innovation awards and their strategic focus on specialized energy trading and risk management (ETRM) solutions. Sameer highlights the development of the Elektra and Hive add-ons, which address critical challenges in power trading and renewable certificate management. Soleja also emphasizes the importance of user experience and unveils upcoming initiatives aimed at achieving unparalleled accuracy and transparency in the industry.

Future Power Technology: Congratulations on winning the Innovation awards for ETRM Software and Renewable Trading Systems. Can you share what these awards mean for Molecule Software and its position in the power industry?

Sameer Soleja, Founder and CEO of Molecule.

Sameer Soleja: For us, this is validation that focus matters. While that is an undeniable fact of software-as-a-service at large, the conventional wisdom has been that ETRMs must do everything for everyone. At Molecule, we have made a point to focus on this part of the energy industry, and it shows.

Future Power Technology: What inspired the development of the Elektra and Hive add-ons, and how do they align with Molecule Software's overall vision and mission?

Sameer Soleja: Both of these were offshoots of an intention to “go deep” in areas where others may not. Elektra offers out-of-the-box features for US power that almost nobody else does, and Hive is based off of customer feedback from working in renewables for 7 years.

Future Power Technology: How does Elektra enhance power trading operations, and what specific challenges does it address for your clients in the North American markets?

Sameer Soleja: Elektra gives our customers the capability to manage ISO trading directly in the ETRM — for example, connecting to ISOs, managing and marking FTRs at high granularity, and settling against LMPs (that we provide) automatically. In many cases, this is stuff that our peers in ETRM just don’t do. The idea is that customers don’t have to do all the messy wrangling and deal with system limitations that often come with power trading. With our platform and the super-modern tech that underlies it, we just take care of it all.

Future Power Technology: In what ways does the Hive add-on simplify the management of renewable certificates, and why is this capability crucial for companies today?

Sameer Soleja: Managing renewable certificates is typically a manual process, with tens-of-thousands of data points — and nearly zero ability to optimize. Hive (which was developed based on positive and negative feedback on our renewable feature set) makes the whole thing automatic. Match obligations to certificates, retire certificates, connect to registries — and optimize the usage of certificates with respect to forward deliveries, market prices, eligibilities and more. This is a level of maturity many of our customers aspire to, and which Hive just achieves.

Future Power Technology: What role does user experience play in the design of Molecule Software's platforms, and how do you ensure that they remain accessible to a broad range of users?

Sameer Soleja: User experience was quite literally the founding principle at Molecule, conceived long ago on a whiteboard in someone’s living room. We have focused relentlessly on having the best UI in the industry. This is so important that this year, we are replacing our UI with an even better one.

The new Molecule UI (codename: Mirage) provides, out of the box, our excellent user experience with much more built-in functionality, for our users around the world:

  • Multiple language support
  • Multiple date and number formats
  • Light & dark mode
  • Mobile adaptability
  • CMD/CTRL+K navigation
  • Our new AI bot, Mo, who bridges the gap between technical and non-technical users

Future Power Technology: Looking ahead, what strategic initiatives is Molecule Software pursuing to further innovate and expand its offerings in the power industry?

Sameer Soleja: You’ll just have to see. :)

One of our key initiatives this year affects all of our customers — what we call Takumi, our six-nines quality initiative. Our customers rely on Molecule as a primary system of record. But under the hood, Molecule does a lot -- and the tradition in the ETRM industry is to blame errors on customers.

We don’t do that — and because we want our customers to have a fantastic experience, our goal is to reach and maintain 99.9999% accuracy (i.e., one-in-a-million errors), with full transparency. Nothing else really matters more, so a lot of 2025’s roadmap is devoted to Takumi — AI anomaly detection, process improvements, etc. — all of which will become a great foundation for 2026.

Future Power Technology: Thank you, Sameer, for sharing your valuable insights and the exciting developments at Molecule Software. Your dedication to precision and user-focused innovation is truly inspiring and sets a high standard in the energy trading sector. We look forward to seeing how Molecule Software's initiatives will continue to influence and advance the power industry. We appreciate your time and perspective in this engaging discussion.
