Hiring activity related to artificial intelligence increased by a CAGR of 56% in the power industry since 2020

The global power industry witnessed a 56% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to artificial intelligence since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 100% year-on-year in 2021, and by 22% year-on-year in 2022.

Notably, computer and mathematical occupations jobs accounted for 46% share of the global power industry’s artificial intelligence-related new job postings since 2020.

Computer and mathematical occupations drive artificial intelligence-related hiring activity

Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 46%, emerged as the top artificial intelligence-related job roles within the power industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 125% year-on-year in 2021 and by 50% year-on-year in 2022.

Management occupations came in second with a share of 14%, with new job postings rising by 136% year-on-year in 2021 and by 49% year-on-year in 2022.

The other prominent artificial intelligence roles include architecture and engineering occupations (10% share), and business and financial operations occupations (7% share).

The top five companies in the power industry accounted for 46% of hiring activity

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Siemens, E.ON, Enel, Schneider Electric, and NextEra Energy. Together they accounted for a combined share of 46% of all artificial intelligence-related new jobs in the power industry.

Siemens posted 2,981 artificial intelligence-related jobs since 2020, followed by E.ON with 1,593 jobs, and Enel with 1,392 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.

New job postings by Siemens increased by 15% year-on-year in 2021 and by 22% year-on-year in 2022, while those by E.ON increased by 583% in 2021 and decreased by 23% in 2022.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 46% share of total new job postings since 2020

The largest share of artificial intelligence-related new job postings in the power industry since 2020 was in the US with 46%, followed by Italy (8%) and Germany (7%). The share represented by the US increased by five percentage points from 42% in 2021 to 47% in 2022.
