Patent applications related to artificial intelligence increased by 36% per year on average in the power industry since 2020

The global power industry experienced a 36% increase in annual average growth rate (AAGR) in the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications between 2020 and 2022. The total number of artificial intelligence-related grants increased by an AAGR of 59% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database.
Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the power industry was 13,188 since 2020, while 4,704 applications were granted.
The top five companies by filings accounted for 46% of patent applications
Analysis of patent applications by assignee shows that State Grid Corporation of China filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the power industry since 2020. The company filed 3,942 artificial intelligence-related patents since 2020.
It was followed by China Southern Power Grid (1,877 applications), North China Electric Power University (273 applications), Zhejiang University (143 applications) and State Grid Hebei Electric Power Supply (135 applications).
The top five companies by grants accounted for 39% of successful patent grants
Analysis of patent grants by assignee shows that State Grid Corporation of China was granted 956 patents related to artificial intelligence within the power industry since 2020. It was followed by China Southern Power Grid (404 grants), Korea Electric Power (93 grants), Strong Force Iot Portfolio (85 grants) and North China Electric Power University (76 grants).
Patent activity was driven by China with a 78% share of total patent publications
The largest share of artificial intelligence-related patent publications in the power industry since 2020 was held by China with 78%, followed by the US (14%) and South Korea (4%).
