Patent applications related to ESG remained almost flat in the power industry since 2020

The global power industry experienced less than 1% increase in annual average growth rate (AAGR) in the number of ESG-related patent applications between 2020 and 2022. The total number of ESG-related grants increased by an AAGR of 14% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database.

Notably, the number of ESG-related patent applications in the power industry was 347,556 since 2020, while 325,881 applications were granted.

The top five companies by filings accounted for 13% of patent applications

Analysis of patent applications by company shows that State Grid Corporation of China filed the most ESG patents within the power industry since 2020. The company filed 7,687 ESG-related patents since 2020.  

It was followed by Toyota Motor (4,331 applications), Contemporary Amperex Technology (3,705 applications), Siemens (3,704 applications) and China Southern Power Grid (3,321 applications).

The top five companies by grants accounted for 12% of successful patent grants

Analysis of patent grants by companies shows that State Grid Corporation of China was granted 4,358 patents related to ESG within the power industry since 2020. It was followed by Toyota Motor (3,644 grants), General Electric (2,629 grants), Samsung Group (2,380 grants) and Siemens (1,901 grants).

Patent activity was driven by China with a 63% share of total patent publications

The largest share of ESG-related patent publications in the power industry since 2020 was held by China with 63%, followed by the US (13%) and Japan (7%).
