Analysis of the key themes driving deal activity reveals that ESG accounted for 8,468 power deals between 2018 and 2022, worth a total value of $11,822m, according to GlobalData’s Deals database covering mergers and acquisitions, private equity, venture financing, equity offerings and partnerships. The $24,359m asset transaction deal by China Three Gorges was the largest disclosed deal in 2022, while the $23,134m acquisition of Suez by Veolia Environnement was the largest disclosed deal in 2021.  

In volume terms, ESG-related deal activity increased by 339% year-on-year in 2022, whereas it declined by 64% year-on-year in 2021.
