Nextpower Arabia launches to fast-track utility-scale solar rollout

Credit: Nextpower Inc.

Nextpower Arabia, a joint venture (JV) between Abunayyan and Nextpower (formerly Nextracker), has been officially incorporated to expedite the deployment of utility-scale solar power plants across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the JV aims to support regional clean energy goals, diversify the economy and enhance local industrial capacity, following an agreement the two companies signed in October 2025.

The partnership leverages Abunayyan’s experience in water and energy infrastructure in the MENA region alongside Nextpower’s expertise in solar tracking systems and technologies, having installed more than 150GW of solar trackers globally.

A new manufacturing facility in Jeddah forms part of this venture, producing advanced solar tracker systems to be implemented in large-scale projects throughout the MENA region. The facility, occupying 42,000m², aims to achieve an annual production capacity of up to 12GW and is expected to open in the second half of 2026.

Iberdrola completes energisation of Alto Paranaíba project in Brazil

Iberdrola, through its Brazilian subsidiary Neoenergia, has completed the energisation of the last segment of the Alto Paranaíba project, finalising one of Brazil’s largest electricity transmission initiatives ahead of schedule.

The project substantially increases the transmission capacity between northern Minas Gerais and São Paulo, strengthening the National Interconnected System. It required an investment close to 4.2bn reais ($781m) and includes total infrastructure comprising 1,600km of transmission lines, 3,250 towers and six substations – marking the largest project of its kind undertaken by Neoenergia in Brazil.

According to Iberdrola, works pertaining to the transmission project concluded more than 15 months earlier than stipulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) deadline. Teams completed all foundation works and erected almost every planned tower across the two states. When the project moved into its final phase in October 2025, cable installation covered more than 1,200km and construction work was 93% completed.

ANEEL awarded Neoenergia the Alto Paranaíba lot during auction 001/2022.

Tata Power unit plans 10GW ingot and wafer facility in southern India

Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL) plans to set up a new 10GW greenfield manufacturing facility for ingots and wafers in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh with an investment of Rs66.75bn ($742.17m). Andhra Pradesh’s State Investment Promotion Board has granted approval for the project.

The plant aims to strengthen India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities and lessen reliance on imports for essential solar and semiconductor components. The project also represents TPREL’s inaugural manufacturing venture in Andhra Pradesh.

The facility will be in the IFFCO Kisan Special Economic Zone, where the Andhra Pradesh Government has allocated 200 acres, comprising 120 acres for the initial phase and 80 for future expansion.

TPREL will also develop a 200MW captive green power plant to provide renewable energy for the facility’s operations.

In a related development, TP Solar, a wholly owned subsidiary of TPREL, reported production of 2.8GW of domestic content requirement solar cells and 2.9GW of solar modules between April 2025 and December 2025.

Empire Wind and Sunrise Wind retaliate against DoI suspension orders

Equinor subsidiary Empire Offshore Wind and Ørsted subsidiary Sunrise Wind have initiated legal proceedings contesting the US Department of the Interior (DoI) directive that ordered a suspension of activity on the 810MW Empire Wind 1 and 924MW Sunrise Wind projects, both off the coast of New York State.

Empire Offshore Wind filed a civil suit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia challenging the DOI’s decision and requested a preliminary injunction that would permit construction to continue while the case is under judicial review. Sunrise Wind also filed a complaint and motion for a preliminary injunction at the same federal court. Empire Wind 1 was reported to be over 60% complete and Sunrise Wind 45% complete.

The DoI’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued a stop-work notice on 22 December 2025, citing national security concerns, such as spinning turbine blades and reflective towers interfering with radar. The projects affected include Empire Wind 1, Sunrise Wind, Revolution Wind, Vineyard Wind 1 and Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind.

ACCIONA Energía starts renewable supply from Logrosan plant in Caceres

ACCIONA Energía has commenced supplying renewable energy from its Logrosan biomass plant located in Caceres, Spain, to the grid. The plant has a capacity of 50MW and is expected to produce 380GWh of electricity per year, avoiding more than 187,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The facility is projected to consume 275,000 metric tonnes of biomass each year, primarily derived from forestry residues. Collecting this material will promote active forest management in the area, lowering fuel loads and thereby decreasing wildfire risk and intensity. More than 900 contractors and small and medium-sized enterprises from agroforestry and transport are expected to be involved across the value chain.

ACCIONA Energía won the contract from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to build, operate and maintain the plant. The project was awarded in the third auction under the renewable energy economic regime, which guarantees a fixed electricity sale price for 20 years.
