General Motors and Samsung to build $3bn electric vehicle battery plant
General Motors (GM) and Samsung SDI are building a $3bn electric vehicle (EV) battery cell plant in the state of Indiana in the east of the US. Operations at the plant are due to begin in 2026 with construction beginning this year. The plant was announced by the companies in April but the location was not announced until 13 June. The plant will have more than 30 gigawatt-hours of capacity and will build nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells.
Hydrogen JV Thyssenkrupp Nucera announces IPO plans
Thyssenkrupp and De Nora have announced plans for an initial public offering (IPO) for the Thyssenkrupp Nucera hydrogen joint venture. Thyssenkrupp Nucera, which has more than 600 hydrogen and electrolysis projects globally, expects to raise as much as $645m (€597.09m) from the share offering. The company will list on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
RecycLiCo and Zenith to build battery recycling plant
Canadian battery recycling company RecycLiCo has announced it will enter into a joint venture with Taiwanese chemical company Zenith Chemical to construct a $25m battery recycling plant in Taiwan. The 2,000 tonnes (t) per year plant will recycle lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries into parts such as Li-ion cathode material and component chemicals such as lithium carbonate.
Yara to postpone clean ammonia business sale
Norwegian chemical and fertiliser company Yara has announced the postponement of the partial sale of its Yara Clean Ammonia subsidiary. The company revealed that the sale of a minority shareholding in the clean ammonia business had been postponed as the portfolio’s attractiveness “surpasses its project valuation”. The company added that “major capital outlays” are slated for 2025 and beyond.
